BRISBANE, 10 August 2012 (PPI Asia) - South Korea's Hansol Paper has announced that it will use Metso Paper to revamp PM 23 at its Changhang facility, turning it into a swing machine able to produce either coated fine paper or thermal paper.

The Finnish supplier will install a new curtain coating unit, a soft calendar, a reel and a moisturizer for curl control.

The value of the project was not disclosed.

The work will enable the 234,000 tonne/yr P&W PM to produce 100,000 tonnes/yr of thermal base paper. It is scheduled to be done by April next year.

The firm is also wrapping up the overhaul of PM 3 at its Osan mill, which is operated by its subsidiary Artone Paper, enabling it to produce thermal paper as well.

The unit's capacity is expected to double to 180,000 tonnes/yr when making base paper for the thermal grade.

Elsewhere, the firm's Chonan plant can manufacture 45,000 tonnes/yr of thermal paper and around 55,000 tonnes/yr of other specialty paper grades.

Once the revamp program is done, Hansol's total thermal paper capacity will be boosted to 325,000 tonnes/yr, making it one of the top global producers of the grade. It will target both domestic and international customers.

The revamps come in a market context wherein there is a glut of fine paper supply even as buying falters.
