COLOGNE, Germany, 27 May 2016 (PPI Asia) - South Korea’s Hansol Paper has announced the closure of the Osan thermal and graphic paper mill run by its subsidiary Artone.

According to the firm, the mill was shut on May 20.

It ascribed the move to the facility’s low competitiveness due to its aging machinery, and it is now considering its options in terms of asset sales.

In 2012, revamp work was carried out at the Osan mill to allow it to produce specialty grades base paper and thermal paper, as Hansol attempted to move from graphic paper making into more profitable sectors.

The thermal paper market is now a large part of Hansol’s business.

The firm did not comment on whether the shut of the Osan mill would affect thermal or base paper supplies, or on if the machinery there might run at other locations.

The machinery that operated at Osan can manufacture somewhere between 98,000 and 105,000 tonnes/yr of base and specialty paper for thermal paper production.
